John Kacere

Biography
John Kacere was an American painter and early practitioner of Photorealism. Best known for his sensual, large-scale depictions of lingerie-clad women’s bottoms, he explained his work as a celebration of the female form. Kacere’s use of strategic cropping and the monumental size of his canvases aligns his work to still life and landscape painting, rather than a typical nude study. Originally an Abstract Expressionist, he began painting from photographs in 1963, gradually developing his seamless oil painting technique. Born on June 23, 1920 in Walker, IA, he went on to receive his BFA and MFA from the University of Iowa. Today, Kacere’s work can be found in the collections of the Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam, the Erie Art Museum in Pennsylvania, the Portland Art Museum, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, among others. He died on August 5, 1999 in Cedar Rapids, IA at the age of 79.
