La Ba Quan

(Vietnamese, born 1976)

La Ba Quan is a contemporary Vietnamese artist known for his impasto paintings of men on the streets and in the cafes of Hanoi. In the tradition of German New Objectivity painters, such as Max Beckmann and Otto Dix, Quan’s works convey the angst he sees in his subjects. Born on September 3, 1976 in Nam Dinh, Vietnam, he went on to receive his MFA from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
