Georges de La Tour

(French, 1593–1652)

Georges de La Tour was a French painter of the Baroque period known for his meditative candlelit scenes. Influenced by the chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio, La Tour produced paintings with a palpable sense of wonder and stillness. The supernatural quality of the light in his paintings is exemplified in The Penitent Magdalene (1650). Born on March 13, 1593 in Vic-sur-Seile, France, it’s believed he was influenced by the work of Dutch Caravaggisti painters such as Gerrit van Honthorst, and may have travelled to Rome in his youth. In 1620, he set up a studio in Lunéville, the provincial hometown of his wealthy wife. Establishing his studio, the artist’s works developed a renown among local merchants, leading the patronage of King Louis XIII of France and Henry II of Lorraine. Most of the few depictions of daylight scenes were painted early on in his career, including The Fortune Teller (1630), a work showing a rich young man being pickpocketed as he has his future told. During the late 1630s, La Tour spent time in Paris, producing commissioned works for both Cardinal Richelieu and Louis XIII. As his career progressed, the artist’s work became increasingly geometric and striking in both its luminosity and abstraction of detail. La Tour died at the height of his career, on January 30, 1652 in Lunéville, France. Thought he was well known in his own time, much of his work was forgotten or misattributed until centuries after his death. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others.
