Qi Gong

Biography
Qi Gong was a Chinese calligrapher and painter known for his traditional landscapes and depictions of flowers and bamboo. Born on July 26, 1912 in Beijing, China, he was a member of the Manchu Imperial family, though he purposefully avoided his heritage. Qi studied both Chinese literature and antiques, while also writing his own poetry. In 1935, he began working as a teaching assistant at Fujen University in Beijing. Though he continued teaching until his death, he remains best known for his calligraphic works. Qi was also renowned as a collector of rare cultural relics, and established an international reputation by attending academic conferences around the world. In 1999, he became the head of the Central Research Institute of Chinese History. The artist died at the age of 92, on June 30, 2005 in Beijing, China. Today, his work is included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
