About This Lot
Red Barn is a quintessential work by one of Pop Art's greatest, Roy Lichtenstein. The present work blurs the lines between high and low brow art. The image depicts a rural American idyll traditionally painted by more conservative landscape artists but Lichtenstein re-imagines it in his reductive, cartoon-inspired style that adds a hint of mockery to the composition. Complete with bold blocks of vibrant colors the artist implores the use of his most signature motif, the Ben-Day dots, to recreate the sky and portions of the ground and walls that not only provide dimension and texture to the work but together creates a signature image in the artist's vast oeuvre.
Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Composed using Ben-Day dots—the method used by newspapers and comic strips to denote gradients and texture—Lichtenstein’s work mimicked the mechanical technique with his own hand on a much larger scale
