About This Lot
Brazilian painter Francisco Domingos "Chico" da Silva started making art in the early 1940s, using charcoal and chalk on the walls of cottages in Formosa Beach. Around the same time, he met the Swiss painter Jean-Pierre Chabloz who introduced Chico into the local art scene and across Europe. After meeting Chabloz, Chico's work was part of group exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, Laisanne, Neuchâtel, along with other cities. The artist's first solo show in Brazil took place in spring of 1961 at Sede dos Diários Associados, in Fortaleza. Chabloz's impact on Chico's career culminated in 1966 with him representing Brazil in the 33rd Venice Biennale. His art focused on the Brazilian flora and fauna, capturing its complexities in a decorative manner. Chico da Silva passed away in 1985 in Fortaleza. His reputation holds as a "primitivist genius" in Brazil.
